What our volunteers do

Our volunteers support our visitors, patients and our staff and do things like:

welcoming patients and visitors and help them find their way around the hospital
helping patients who arrive for clinical appointments
spending time and doing fun activities with patients while in hospital
serving tea and coffee to visitors who spend a long time in our outpatient clinics
tending to fresh flowers in patient rooms and wards
taking a selection of books and activities from our free library to patient's rooms
supporting emergency department patients, visitors and staff
helping us with routine office requests
playing live music in our public spaces.

Who can apply

We welcome people of all abilities and cultural backgrounds to join our volunteer team, but you must:

be at least 18 years old,
provide references
have a criminal history check.

You also need to be vaccinated against measles, mumps, rubella, whooping cough (pertussis), chicken pox (varicella) and hepatitis B. We can help you get vaccinated before you start if you need to.

How volunteering works

Our service hours are 6 am to 6 pm, Monday to Friday and your shift patterns will be the same every week.

Our shifts are 3 to 4 hours long however we can be flexible.

If your shift is 4 hours or longer you'll get:

limited free parking
a meal voucher for the Alexandra Place Cafeteria.

We ask that you commit to at least one shift per week for the first 6 months. After that we'll talk about your experience and work out ongoing shifts.

Before you start

Before you start, we'll do your criminal history and reference checks. We'll need your written consent and proof of identity documents, such as your driver's licence, passport, proof of age card or Medicare card to do these.

We will give you orientation and training for the role you will be doing.
